"If one person gets well, the whole family situation improves.”
Love Someone with a Drinking Problem? We've been there too. Al-Anon and Alateen Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who meet to share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.
Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic. Looking for a meeting? We would love to give you the encouragement you need! what to do in between meetingsGoing to meetings is a great way to kickstart and maintain your Al-Anon recovery, but how do you survive all of those hours without meetings? We've got some books for that!
Over the years, many members have found our Al-anon books to be the life-line that keeps them steady in between meetings. Here is a list of some of Al-Anon's most popular books, which we lovingly call CAL - Conference Approved Literature.
The Preface from Courage to Change: "Taking life one day at a time has proven essential in the Al-Anon program of recovery for those whose lives have been adversely affected by the problem of alcoholism in a relative or a friend. This book, like its companion volume One Day at a Time in Al-Anon, is designed to keep our focus on today and give us the courage to change the things we can."
From One Day at a Time in Al-anon: "This book suggests living “One Day at a Time”, and the ways in which we may find in each day a measure of comfort, serenity, and a sense of achievement. It discourages dwelling on past errors and disappointments; it visualizes the future only as a series of new days, each a fresh opportunity for self‑realization and growth. Today is only a small manageable segment of time in which our difficulties need not overwhelm us. This lifts from our hearts and minds the heavy weight of both past and future."
From How Al-Anon Works: "None of us comes to Al‑Anon because our lives resemble the “happily-ever-after” of fairy tales. We come to Al‑Anon because we are grappling with an assortment of problems. We hope to find some answers, but doubt that there is any hope to be found anywhere. Other people’s stories seem so different from ours that we may not recognize that we have anything in common with one another. But whether we realize it or not, there is a common thread. Each of us has been affected by someone else’s drinking problem."
